Books and comics were also a great way to spend
your pocket money. Great adventures could be read about. Countries that
were so far away were brought into our bedrooms. Every planet in the universe
had green people on them, all out to destroy the earth. The fifties was
a simple time and I think we believed everything we read.

Proper books for children.
Proper books were something else again. The Famous Five
or The Swallows and Amazons were OK. Some of the other stuff our parents
wanted us to read was yuck. If I remember The Darling Buds Of May was made
in to a film series called "The Larkins" with Peggy Mount as
Ma Larkin and David Kossof as Pa Larkin.

The Green Lantern.
The more fantastic the better.

Just a few of the many comics.
Just a few of the many comics that we could read. The
clever boy would get himself a paper round and read the comics in the shop
before he started or read them on the round before they were delivered.

All of the wonderful Super Heroes
All of the wonderful Super Heroes that started to appear
in the comics, would come alive at the Saturday Morning Pictures. Like Clark
Kent, Superman's alter ego, I would walk around wearing a pair of glasses
thinking nobody would recognise me. It did not fool my teacher for a minute.
