A short ride through the lanes took us to Sevenoaks. An
ancient market town. Once a week farmers would come and go, buy and sell,
all manner of stock.

Of Britain. Those were the days when every town had a cinema, in some cases
more than one. Those that did not get converted to Bingo, lost out to high
rise parking spaces. This one closed in 1960 and was later demolished.

Getting on our bikes and in less than half an hour we were
in Swanley in Kent. The Garden of England. Orchards as far as the eye could
see. People from the east end of London would spend their holidays in the
area picking the fruit. A short distance up the road the hops started. By
the 1960's most of the orchards had gone and the building had started.....

Unfortunately Sevenoaks was built on a main arterial road, the A25. One way went to Dover and the ports. The other way went to Gatwick airport and Brighton. As more and more cars came on the roads Sevenoaks came to a stand still.
The road at Riverhead at the bottom of Sevenoaks High Street, was often the final destination for bank holiday trippers by the early 60's.
