The British Pub is an endangered species, on a par with the panda. Many of them have been converted into fast plastic food places with names like 'The Harvester' to give the impression of "country food". Others have just closed, pulled down or turned into private homes with names like "Dun Pullin". Even the beer has gone, replaced by foreign lagers.

A local to me in a village called Ightham in Kent. At the moment it is closed for refurbishment. They are probably trying to find space for the monster TV and karaoke machine. Sadly, since I first put up this page the pub has gone completely and is now a private home.
The final insult! Once a wonderful pub, serving real beer. Now the 'The Three Mariners' in Scarborough is a museum.

Pubs were given a sign out side, often to indicate what went on in the pub. It was also for the many who could neither read or write, so a picture was often the only way of giving directions. Most signs are self explanatory, like the "Coach and Horses" this was where coaches stopped for the night or changed horses. Names like "The Fighting Cocks" or "The Bear and Ragged Staff" were where cock fighting and bear baiting took place. How will historians in the future see the pub names of today. What will they think when they are building the new M13725 and they dig up the remains of "The Slug and Lettuce".
A few pub signs that will soon vanish.
