Thursday, May 3rd 1951. The great day came, the Festival
Of Britain. Under a blue canopy at the top of the steps of St Pauls Cathedral.
The King declared, "I see this Festival as a symbol of Britain's
abiding courage and vitality. I declare the Festival Of Britain open and
wish it universal success." The State trumpeters then broke the
silence with a fanfare. At the Tower Of London a gun Salute was heard, more
guns from Hyde Park. Then the bells of St Pauls rang out the news across
London. Soon, all across the country the bells were ringing. We knew how
to do things then, not like the fiasco of the Millennium Dome.
