This was the year of the good and the bad. On the
one hand Donald Campbell and Stirling Moss were showing the
world how great we were. While behind our back Kim Philby was selling
us down the river.

'The Third Man' Kim Philby, employed by MI 5 as
head of anti-Communist counter espionage. Must have got the job
as part of a 'Youth Opportunity Programme.

The Great Stirling Moss winning the Italian Mille
Miglia in May. His name became synonymous with speed. For years
traffic police would pull you over for speeding with, "All
right sunshine, who do you think you are? Stirling Moss".

Commercial television started on the 22nd September.
It turned into a bit of a failure for the first night as the BBC
had Grace Archer murdered in the 'Archers' radio show and everybody
listened to the wireless instead of watching the TV.
