Blue Bird

Donald Campbell in Bluebird.

This was the year of the good and the bad. On the one hand Donald Campbell and Stirling Moss were showing the world how great we were. While behind our back Kim Philby was selling us down the river.

Kim Philby

'The Third Man' Kim Philby, employed by MI 5 as head of anti-Communist counter espionage. Must have got the job as part of a 'Youth Opportunity Programme.

Stirling Moss

The Great Stirling Moss winning the Italian Mille Miglia in May. His name became synonymous with speed. For years traffic police would pull you over for speeding with, "All right sunshine, who do you think you are? Stirling Moss".

Commercial television started on the 22nd September. It turned into a bit of a failure for the first night as the BBC had Grace Archer murdered in the 'Archers' radio show and everybody listened to the wireless instead of watching the TV.
