Britain's first motor way opened this year, no speed limit. Most cars disintegrated if they went over 40mph. Because of the speed of cars at that time no maximum speed limit had been imposed on any roads.

As more cars came on the roads men with paint brushes went round painting yellow lines in the road telling us we could not park. Then came the parking meter. The money collected paid for more yellow paint, so the only place to park was at a meter.
