away. There was a place where people worked all week in a factory
or a market stall, and on Saturday played at their sports. These
part timers are still remembered today, for the magic that they
performed. |

| Stanley Matthews signed for Stoke as a 15 year old on a pound a
week. He joined the first team 2 years later at 17. In a glorious
career that spanned 35 years. He was one of our greatest ever players.
His final game in 1965 against Fulham was a celebration of his life,
before he hung up his boots. |
