During the war 'Utility' products were introduced.
All things marked with the 'Pac Man' symbol, was utility and
rationed. These fashions were still about by the early
fifties.
By the time rationing ceased, most
of the 'Utility' clothes had been altered out of recognition. Every
town had it's own haberdashery store, and many women still made
their own clothes. As fashions changed from the austerity of war
time to the brighter colours of peace. Women started to have a choice.
The brand new 'Automatically' was almost the girls
best friend.

Women still made their own clothes in the fifties as the choices
in the shops were not extensive. By the mid-fifties catalogue had
arrived and a greater choice was available.

New woman's Magazines started to appear almost weekly. Each
one told the new woman how to dress and do her make-up. Because
she obviously did not know before.
